Black Powder Match April 29, 2012

Southern Chester County Sportsman’s and Farmers Association
Presents
“The Smokin’ Spring Thing 2012”
Muzzleloading Target Match
Sunday April 29, 2012
12:00 Noon until 4:00pm

Do you find Sunday afternoons to be….well… kinda’ boring? Have you been telling yourself that it’s time to get out and have some fun for a change? Well then, put away the lawnmower and garden tools for just one afternoon; put the cell phone on silent and turn off that Lifetime Movie that you’re watching. Yeah, we know you watch chick-flicks! So, instead of doing the same old thing you do every Sunday afternoon, why not get your rifle out of the closet and join us on the 50 yard range for an afternoon of bad jokes, challenging targets and great fellowship? Ok, we promise to keep the bad jokes to a minimum. But, there’s no limit on tall-stories, laughter or strange targets.
Because it’s Sunday, this will be a short match of 4 targets, with 5 to 6 shots for each target. Prizes will be awarded for top 3 scores of each target and will consist of road-kill….or..uhm..I mean…meat of some sort suitable for the grill and maybe some bacon for your breakfast too.
Any iron sight or peep sighted rifle, inline rifles are welcome and encouraged. Blackpowder or suitable Blackpowder substitute will be permitted. Patched round ball or conical bullet is also permissible. Scoped rifles, sorry, that one we can’t do- open sights only.
Scoring will be done by the guy with bad eyesight and less than proficient math skills, who recently lost his calculator so, best of luck!
Due to the short shooting time on Sunday there will be no lunch provided but we will take a short break between targets.

Match fees – Members of Brandywine Long-rifles or SCCS&FA - $10.00
Non Members - $15.00 (unless the non-member has a valid NMLRA or NRA card, then $10.00)
Come on! You can’t even buy a ticket to a bad movie on Sunday for $10.00!
Please, RSVP by sending an email to Blackpowder@sccsfa.org no later than April 27.

Black Powder Blanket Shoot January 14

The Black Powder Committee will have a match on Saturday January 14, 2012 Starting at 10:30 AM (weather permitting) on the 50yd range. This match is in place of the Brandywine Long Rifles match normally run on this Saturday. We are taking this time slot on their behalf, as they decided earlier in the year to leave this date open on their match calendar.

This match will be a "blanket shoot". There will be no entry fee. Bring an item of interest to a muzzleloading shooter of about $10.00 in value. Here are some ideas:

  • Cast round balls
  • Shooting and/or cleaning patches
  • Ball starters
  • Patch knife
  • Percussion caps or flints
  • Small leather items such as ball bags

Check your shooting bag and if you have an item in good condition that you've not needed to use for awhile, chances are pretty good that there may be someone who could use it. Common caliber items for calibers .36 .40 .45 .50 .54 are best.

The match will be open to all muzzleloaders - modern inline shooters are encouraged to attend!

Open or peep sights (sorry, no scopes).

Patched round ball or modern sabot bullets will be permitted.

Black Powder or Approved blackpowder substitutes permitted.

The match will be limited to 6 relays of 5 shots each instead of our usual 8, as we do expect winter weather to be with us. In the event of snow we will postpone to another more suitable Saturday that will be announced as soon as is practical.

Scoring will be the usual half ball or the best judgement of the shoot-master. Disputes will be handled in the usual manner - ignored with the opinion of the shoot-master as the final arbiter. Targets will be the most miserable and confusing we can find in our collection, just so you can clear your head after Christmas party season!

For more info or to RSVP please contact the Black Powder Chairman at blackpowder@sccsfa.org.

Free Constitution Class

Free Constitution Class

When: Starting September 21st  7 PM to 9:00 PM

Where: Southern Chester County Sportsman's and Farmers Association

SCCFSA is hosting a class on the U.S. Constitution and our nation's founding principles.

In this day and age of government over-reach, it is more important than ever that concerned citizens like you learn anew the principles that have made America great and will continue to serve her well.

To date, over 250 people have taken Coalition for Advancing Freedom (CAF) Constitution Classes. We continue to hear what a difference these 6-week classes are making in people's lives. This class will re-kindle your understanding and appreciation for our nation's framework of governance, give you hope for the future and spur you on to civic action. Parents with high-school teens, get some quality time with your young adults and sign up with them.

This is a 6 week course, one night a week which covers a clear overview of the U.S. Constitution. It also covers how important religion was, numerous historical facts, the founder's thinking on many of the Constitutional debates and our religion that are so relevant to us today.

The course is based on the book,
The 5000 Year Leap, and the Rick Green lecture series from Wallbuilders. The course is free. Course materials, including two books, a pocket Constitution, and numerous handouts are available for purchase at CAF's wholesale cost of $25.00.

Just sign up with Dave Hutchins via email
vice-pres@sccsfa.org  or Amy Jo Hutchins  via email – membership@sccsfa.org.

8/13 - USPSA Range Officer Level II Course

The Southern Chester County Practical Shooters Association is acting as the host for a USPSA Chief Range Officer course on Aug 13, 2011. The course will be in the SCCSFA club house - no ranges will be used. We ask that club members try not to disturb the class while it is in progress.

The USPSA (IPSC) has three levels of Range Officer training. The Level I Course (Range Officer) is offered on a regular basis at clubs throughout the US. The Level II Course (Chief Range Officer) is normally done by correspondence and can take several months to complete. By having the class at Southern Chester, we can offer Range Officers through out this region a unique opportunity to take the bulk of the class in a one day format. By doing so, we will greatly increase the knowledge and skills of the Range Officers we depend upon to conduct matches in the area.

We will also be needing a small group of members to assist with labor.

If you can help (about 8hrs), please contact the club Vice president

2011 USPSA Match Schedule

Southern Chester County Practical Shooters Association (SCCPSA) is one of some 12 clubs in the Mid Atlantic Section.  We hold eight matches per year, one match per month, March through October on the third Saturday of the month.  The club (our home club is Southern Chester County Sportsmen's and Farmers' Association) is located in the Kennett Square, Pa. area on Rte. 926 about 3 miles west of the Rte. 82 intersection.

The 2011 match schedule is: March 19, April 16, May 21, June 18, July 16, August 20, September 17, and October 15. The SCCSFA 15, 25, 50, and 75 yard ranges will be used for each match.

Registration starts at 10 AM, walk through at 10:45 AM and the matches start promptly at 11 AM.  Pre registration is not required.  These matches are open to the public and the entrance fee is $20 for USPSA members, $5 for Juniors and $25 for non members.  Non-members may join USPSA for $40 and shoot the match for free.  We average about 50 competitors per match and we're usually done about 3:00 PM.  Matches usually consist of 5 stages requiring 100+ rounds (you'll want to bring at least 150 to be sure of having enough).

If you have not competed in a USPSA match before you will need to be safety checked. First time competitors need to see me before 10 AM. This is no big deal.  A Range Officer will look over your equipment to make sure it complies with the rules (your holster must cover your trigger guard, for example).  You will learn the range commands that the RO will be using while you are on the firing line.  And you will have to do a couple of live fire drills to show the RO that you can handle your firearm safely.

For more information contact Graham Smith at
gsmith.sccpsa@gmail.com.

Field Day will be held at SCCSFA this year on October 1st. Mark your calendars now.

NRA Youth Education Summit

From the NRA:

The National Rifle Association launched the National Youth Education Summit (Y.E.S.) in 1996 in an effort to encourage America's youth to become active and knowledgeable citizens.  The Summit is a seven-day, expense-paid leadership week in Washington, D.C.  Each year, the NRA selects the best and the brightest students to visit the nation's capital where participants learn the significance of the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights while developing an understanding of federal government and the importance of active participation.  Students tour the U.S. Capitol, the National Archives Museum, the Pentagon, the NRA National Firearms Museum, and many of the memorials and monuments in Washington, D.C.

The application deadline is Feburary 14, 2011. Dates for the Y.E.S. program are 6/20 - 6/26/11.

Frosty Round Ball Match Cancelled

Good Morning Everyone,

The Snow started earlier than we thought it would, which means we will likely get more snow than was first predicted. The other folks that originally wanted to shoot have contacted me to say that they were not coming due to the weather. Regrettably, I'm going to have to cancel the match today. Thank you for your interest and willingness to participate. I will check the club calendar and see if we can't do this on a different Saturday, and re-title the match "Frosty Round Ball 2.0."

Have a great weekend and stay safe!

Thank you,

A. Drew Gregg

Frosty Roundball With Hot Chile Rifle Match

“FROSTY ROUND BALL WITH HOT CHILE RIFLE MATCH”

WHEN – Saturday January 8th at 10:30am

WHERE – SCCS&FA 50YD RANGE

ENTRY FEE - $5.00

This will be a just for fun match. We know, it’s just after Christmas and finances are low. You haven’t pulled the trigger in about a month. It’s now January and it will likely be cold on the range. Well, we have a solution for you. A short match of only 5 targets (you will notice a spring theme to the targets that will make you long for Spring that much more) at a small fee of only $5.00! We will break for a lunch of homemade chile and crusty bread for free!! Ok, not really free, your entry fee covers our cost of making your lunch. There are no prizes for this match, just good food and friendship with your fellow front-stuffers and some practice time on the range. If you have a favorite dish or desert that you would like to share please bring it along. I will try to make the targets miserable, errr… I mean, challenging!

Bring enough powder and ball to shoot 20 to 25 rounds and don’t forget your gloves. Lunch will be served in the clubhouse to allow everyone to warm up a bit before we finish the match.

This match will be for any open sighted muzzle loading rifle, inline rifles are acceptable and yes, you may shoot Pyrodex pellets if you feel you must. Please no scoped rifles, magnifying the gray cloud on the range doesn’t really help your shooting that much anyway.

Please note that this match is being run by SCCS&FA Black Powder Committee and is open to the public. Our friends that are members of Brandywine Long Rifles are encouraged to join us for some good food and frosty round ball shootin’.

IMPORTANT – If you plan to attend please send Drew Gregg an email before Friday January 7, so that we're sure to have enough targets and food available for everyone. Send email to: with the number of shooters that plan to attend.

Thank you for your help!!!

Calendar Fixed

Google fixed the bug in their calendar which caused events to be displayed on the wrong day when the calendar month view was selected. We've changed the default view back to the month view.

Bug in Event Calendar

We are experiencing a bug with our
Event Calendar, which is hosted by Google. If you select the Month view, some events (notably the Brandywine Longrifles shoots and the monthly meetings) are showing up on the wrong days of the week even though the event details are correct. If you select the Week or Agenda view the events are displayed correctly.

Many Google Calendar users are reporting the same issue.

Until Google resolves this we've changed the default to the Week view.
