Black Powder Blanket Shoot 1/14/12
The Black Powder Committee will have a match on Saturday January 14, 2012 Starting at 10:30 AM (weather permitting) on the 50yd range. This match is in place of the Brandywine Long Rifles match normally run on this Saturday. We are taking this time slot on their behalf, as they decided earlier in the year to leave this date open on their match calendar.
This match will be a "blanket shoot". There will be no entry fee. Bring an item of interest to a muzzleloading shooter of about $10.00 in value. Here are some ideas:
- Cast round balls
- Shooting and/or cleaning patches
- Ball starters
- Patch knife
- Percussion caps or flints
- Small leather items such as ball bags
Check your shooting bag and if you have an item in good condition that you've not needed to use for awhile, chances are pretty good that there may be someone who could use it. Common caliber items for calibers .36 .40 .45 .50 .54 are best.
The match will be open to all muzzleloaders - modern inline shooters are encouraged to attend!
Open or peep sights (sorry, no scopes).
Patched round ball or modern sabot bullets will be permitted.
Black Powder or Approved blackpowder substitutes permitted.
The match will be limited to 6 relays of 5 shots each instead of our usual 8, as we do expect winter weather to be with us. In the event of snow we will postpone to another more suitable Saturday that will be announced as soon as is practical.
Scoring will be the usual half ball or the best judgement of the shoot-master. Disputes will be handled in the usual manner - ignored with the opinion of the shoot-master as the final arbiter. Targets will be the most miserable and confusing we can find in our collection, just so you can clear your head after Christmas party season!
For more info or to RSVP please contact the Black Powder Chairman at blackpowder@sccsfa.org.

PA Game Commission Confirms EHD in Pennsylvania Deer
(Just to be clear, EHD is not the same as CWD, but neither one is good for the whitetail population.)
Monday, September 19, 2011
HARRISBURG - Pennsylvania Game Commission officials today announced that test results from a wild deer have confirmed that epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD) has been found in Northampton County. This sample was collected Aug. 18.
EHD also has been confirmed in captive deer in Northampton County in the vicinity of the wild deer. Additionally, one captive deer in Erie County was confirmed to have died of EHD, based on a sample collected Aug. 13.
Residents are encouraged to call their respective Game Commission region office to report dead or sick deer. Contact information is available on page 5 of the 2011-12 Pennsylvania Digest of Hunting and Trapping Regulations, which is presented to each license buyer, and also on the agency's website (www.pgc.state.pa.us) by clicking on "About Us" in the menu bar at the top of the page and then selecting "Regional Information."
To provide the public with more information about EHD, the agency has posted an EHD information page on its website (www.pgc.state.pa.us). To view the information, place your cursor over "Wildlife" in the menu bar at the top of the page, then put your cursor over "Wildlife Diseases" in the drop-down menu listing and then click on "Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (EHD)."
EHD is a common but sporadic disease in white-tailed deer populations of the United States, and is contracted by the bite of insects called "biting midges." In more northern states, such as Pennsylvania, EHD occurs less often and affected deer are less likely to mount an effective immune response. The virus usually kills the deer within five to 10 days. It is not spread from deer to deer by contact. While EHD is not infectious to humans, deer displaying severe symptoms of EHD are usually not suitable for consumption because of the rapid deterioration of the meat and secondary bacterial infection.
"Reports of dead or dying deer are important to us," said Doug Killough, Game Commission Southeast Region Office director. "Though an actual count of afflicted deer is impossible to obtain, because of rapid decomposition and the area where the outbreak is occurring, we still value these reports. Also, tissue samples must be extracted within 24 hours of death to be suitable for conducting tests. That is why it is so important that we hear from residents as soon as possible after they find a suspect deer."
There is no evidence that humans are at risk from EHD, but other diseases could be transmitted by careless hygiene when processing deer.
"As a routine precaution, all hunters are encouraged to wear rubber or latex gloves when handling or field-dressing any animal, and wash their hands and tools thoroughly after field dressing," Killough said. "As with any wild game, meat should always be thoroughly cooked.
"Even though some EHD symptoms are similar to those of chronic wasting disease (CWD) - such as excessive drooling, weakness and a loss of fear of humans - there is no relationship between EHD and CWD. However, because these diseases coexist, deer submitted for EHD testing also are being tested for CWD."
EHD is one of those diseases in which the mortality rate can be amplified by anything that serves to congregate deer, such as supplemental feeding, and placement of salt or mineral blocks. While the disease is not spread through deer-to-deer contact, congregating animals through feeding does make transmission easier by allowing midges that carry the virus greater access to a larger number of animals in a more confined area. Therefore, such feeding activities should be discontinued immediately.
In 1996, EHD was suspected to be the cause of death in nearly 25 deer in Adams County, but test results in that case were inconclusive. Other outbreaks in Pennsylvania were confirmed in 2002 and 2007.

We're back!
As you can see, the SCCSFA.org website is now back online. Sometime last Saturday night/Sunday morning, a tree was blown over and took down both the power and Verizon lines to the clubhouse. PECO restored power yesterday and Verizon should be restoring our phone and Internet service shortly.
At last night's membership meeting, the Board of Directors approved migrating the website from a server hosted at the club to an outside hosting company. We're using Hostgator, down in Texas. The new server is located in a proper data center with better backup power and ten redundant Internet connections. Now that the website and email have become the primary means by which the club communicates with its members, we felt it was time to make this move. Hopefully, server outages will now be a thing of the past for SCCSFA.

To date, over 250 people have taken Coalition for Advancing Freedom (CAF) Constitution Classes. We continue to hear what a difference these 6-week classes are making in people's lives. This is a 6 week course, one night a week which covers a clear overview of the U.S. Constitution. It also covers how important religion was, numerous historical facts, the founder's thinking on many of the Constitutional debates and our religion that are so relevant to us today.
The course is based on the book, The 5000 Year Leap, and the Rick Green lecture series from Wallbuilders. The course is free. Course materials, including two books, a pocket Constitution, and numerous handouts are available for purchase at CAF's wholesale cost of $25.00.

SCCSFA is now an NRA Gold Medal Club
From club newsletter editor Gordon Hendry:
The club received its 2011 NRA Gold Club Award, The award took many hours of work by various club members in establishing the programs required. In addition to maintaining 100% NRA membership, a club must have an active youth program, and a newsletter at least 4 times a year for members.

8/13 - USPSA Range Officer Level II Course
The Southern Chester County Practical Shooters Association is acting as the host for a USPSA Chief Range Officer course on Aug 13, 2011. The course will be in the SCCSFA club house - no ranges will be used. We ask that club members try not to disturb the class while it is in progress.
The USPSA (IPSC) has three levels of Range Officer training. The Level I Course (Range Officer) is offered on a regular basis at clubs throughout the US. The Level II Course (Chief Range Officer) is normally done by correspondence and can take several months to complete. By having the class at Southern Chester, we can offer Range Officers through out this region a unique opportunity to take the bulk of the class in a one day format. By doing so, we will greatly increase the knowledge and skills of the Range Officers we depend upon to conduct matches in the area.

Range Closure 8/4 - 8/5
On Thursday August 4th all the rifle/pistol ranges will be closed from 12 noon until 10am on Friday morning.
We will be pouring the concrete pads on the ranges for the new shooting benches. We are in need of labor help for this project. We have 2 members with cement finishing experience so far but we need at least 2 more. The more finishers we have the easier & quicker the work will go. If you are able to help out you will need to be at the club at around noon/1pm for final prep work & the concrete will be delivered around 3pm, then it will be a push against the clock to get it in & finished before it sets up.
For those who are able to attend, please contact the club Vice President Dave Hutchins vice-pres@sccsfa.org.

If you reside in London Grove township and are a registered Republican, I would like to ask for your vote on Tuesday. I am a long time member of this club and a conservative who has been endorsed by the Republican party for the position of Township Supervisor. My political position has always been staunchly pro gun, Second Amendment freedoms, and property rights. These are all under attack by our government at various levels. As township supervisors I and my running mate, club member Dale Simpkins, will do our upmost to protect these rights.

Winchester .223 Ammo Recall
Winchester has announced a recall of their Ranger Law Enforcement .223 Remington 64 grain Power-Point ammunition with lot numbers ending DK01, DK11, DK21, DK31, DK41, and DK51.
Through extensive evaluation Winchester has determined the above lots of RANGER® Law Enforcement ammunition may contain incorrect propellant. Incorrect propellant in this ammunition may cause firearm damage, rendering the firearm inoperable, and subject the shooter or bystanders to a risk of serious personal injury when fired.
DO NOT USE WINCHESTER® RANGER® 223 REMINGTON 64 GRAIN POWER-POINT® AMMUNITION THAT HAS A LOT NUMBER ENDING IN DK01, DK11, DK21, DK31, DK41 or DK51. The ammunition Lot Number is ink stamped inside the right tuck flap of the 20-round carton.

Passing of William R. Law
It is with great sadness that we deliver the news of the passing of one of our own.
William R. Law passed away late Monday night Feb. 21st at Jennersville Hospital. Bill had served our organization honorably for many decades as Treasurer, Safety Officer, President & at times Secretary as well as many years as a Director at large. Bill has been a pivotal figure in the shaping of the organization over the years and will be surely missed.
2011 USPSA Match Schedule
Southern Chester County Practical Shooters Association (SCCPSA) is one of some 12 clubs in the Mid Atlantic Section. We hold eight matches per year, one match per month, March through October on the third Saturday of the month. The club (our home club is Southern Chester County Sportsmen's and Farmers' Association) is located in the Kennett Square, Pa. area on Rte. 926 about 3 miles west of the Rte. 82 intersection.
The 2011 match schedule is: March 19, April 16, May 21, June 18, July 16, August 20, September 17, and October 15. The SCCSFA 15, 25, 50, and 75 yard ranges will be used for each match.
Registration starts at 10 AM, walk through at 10:45 AM and the matches start promptly at 11 AM. Pre registration is not required. These matches are open to the public and the entrance fee is $20 for USPSA members, $5 for Juniors and $25 for non members. Non-members may join USPSA for $40 and shoot the match for free. We average about 50 competitors per match and we're usually done about 3:00 PM. Matches usually consist of 5 stages requiring 100+ rounds (you'll want to bring at least 150 to be sure of having enough).
If you have not competed in a USPSA match before you will need to be safety checked. First time competitors need to see me before 10 AM. This is no big deal. A Range Officer will look over your equipment to make sure it complies with the rules (your holster must cover your trigger guard, for example). You will learn the range commands that the RO will be using while you are on the firing line. And you will have to do a couple of live fire drills to show the RO that you can handle your firearm safely.
For more information contact Graham Smith at gsmith.sccpsa@gmail.com.
Field Day
Field Day will be held at SCCSFA this year on October 1st. Mark your calendars now.
If you are interested in helping out at Field Day please contact our Vice President, David Hutchins, vice-pres@sccsfa.org.
Crossbows on SCCSFA Ranges Suspended Indefinitely
Until further notice, crossbows may not be used on either the indoor or outdoor archery ranges.
The backstops are not designed to stop crossbow bolts. We are seeing bolts completely passing through and hitting the wall on the indoor range. Other bolts are getting embedded up to the nock in the backstop and removal is causing damage to the backstops. The Archery Committee is investigating ways to allow the use of crossbows at SCCSFA, but until this issue is solved, crossbow use is no longer permitted at SCCSFA.
Questions about the crossbow policy should be addressed to the Archery Committee, archery@sccsfa.org.

Designed as a practical compliment to the book, this course will empower the shooting athlete to reach their competitive goals by showing them “how” to properly train their sport utilizing drills with correct design and perfect execution. NRA Youth Education Summit
From the NRA:
The National Rifle Association launched the National Youth Education Summit (Y.E.S.) in 1996 in an effort to encourage America's youth to become active and knowledgeable citizens. The Summit is a seven-day, expense-paid leadership week in Washington, D.C. Each year, the NRA selects the best and the brightest students to visit the nation's capital where participants learn the significance of the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights while developing an understanding of federal government and the importance of active participation. Students tour the U.S. Capitol, the National Archives Museum, the Pentagon, the NRA National Firearms Museum, and many of the memorials and monuments in Washington, D.C.
The application deadline is Feburary 14, 2011. Dates for the Y.E.S. program are 6/20 - 6/26/11.

Frosty Round Ball Match Cancelled
Good Morning Everyone,
The Snow started earlier than we thought it would, which means we will likely get more snow than was first predicted. The other folks that originally wanted to shoot have contacted me to say that they were not coming due to the weather. Regrettably, I'm going to have to cancel the match today. Thank you for your interest and willingness to participate. I will check the club calendar and see if we can't do this on a different Saturday, and re-title the match "Frosty Round Ball 2.0."
Have a great weekend and stay safe!
Thank you,
A. Drew Gregg

Frosty Roundball With Hot Chile Rifle Match
“FROSTY ROUND BALL WITH HOT CHILE RIFLE MATCH”
WHEN – Saturday January 8th at 10:30am
WHERE – SCCS&FA 50YD RANGE
ENTRY FEE - $5.00
This will be a just for fun match. We know, it’s just after Christmas and finances are low. You haven’t pulled the trigger in about a month. It’s now January and it will likely be cold on the range. Well, we have a solution for you. A short match of only 5 targets (you will notice a spring theme to the targets that will make you long for Spring that much more) at a small fee of only $5.00! We will break for a lunch of homemade chile and crusty bread for free!! Ok, not really free, your entry fee covers our cost of making your lunch. There are no prizes for this match, just good food and friendship with your fellow front-stuffers and some practice time on the range. If you have a favorite dish or desert that you would like to share please bring it along. I will try to make the targets miserable, errr… I mean, challenging!
Bring enough powder and ball to shoot 20 to 25 rounds and don’t forget your gloves. Lunch will be served in the clubhouse to allow everyone to warm up a bit before we finish the match.
This match will be for any open sighted muzzle loading rifle, inline rifles are acceptable and yes, you may shoot Pyrodex pellets if you feel you must. Please no scoped rifles, magnifying the gray cloud on the range doesn’t really help your shooting that much anyway.
Please note that this match is being run by SCCS&FA Black Powder Committee and is open to the public. Our friends that are members of Brandywine Long Rifles are encouraged to join us for some good food and frosty round ball shootin’.
IMPORTANT – If you plan to attend please send Drew Gregg an email before Friday January 7, so that we're sure to have enough targets and food available for everyone. Send email to:
Thank you for your help!!!
